[Kavitha Balakrishnan is an artist, poet and art educator based at Kerala, India. She has an MFA in Art History from M S University Baroda(1998). Her area of PhD work is the illustrated print picture culture in Malayalam periodicals(2009). Since 2000 Kavitha engages with the changing scenario of practicing, writing and educating art and art-history in Kerala, contributing critical reviews in both Malayalam (the native language) and English. Her articles are widely published in journals like Marg, Art & Deal, TAKE on art, peer reviewed Journal of Illustration Research Intellect, London etc. She also has four books in Malayalam on art, articulating Kerala in the context of Modern and contemporary practices. An edited Malayalam volume on M F Hussain translated seminal academic writings in English on Modern Indian art history for Malayali audience (2013). She has three collections of Malayalam poetry to her credit. Winner of Soviet Land Nehru Award for painting at the age of thirteen, Kavitha also started painting since childhood. Eventually she finds her artistic language at the generic crossroads of the disciplines of Art, Art History and Poetry exhibiting art works at the Merzbarn Cumbria UK, Manchester Metropolitan University, Loafers art Cafe in Fort Kochi and has done experimental displays at various Poetry Festivals in Kerala.]
